Some Tips on Grade Calculation

Updated: Aug 13, 2019

Check out the Journalism Club’s brand new GAF (Grade Accountability Form used for Grade Calculation), now complete with Grade Calculation, Grade Prediction, and Heat Mapping: GAF

Let’s use the following class as we discuss grade calculation: Professor L’s CLASS-101 at COC

Professor L uses the following grading scale:

Assignments: 15%

Tests: 60%

Final: 25%

And my grades in the class are :

Assignments (15%): 95%

Tests (60%): 92%

Final (25%): 96%

The basic formula involves multiplying your grade in that category by the weight of the category (in decimal form), and then adding all the products, then dividing by the weight. This is called a weighted average.

95 * 0.15 = 14.25

92 * 0.60 = 55.20

96 * 0.25 = 24.00

14.25 + 55.20 + 24.00 = 93.45 → 93.45 / 1 = 93.45 % Overall Grade

Alternatively, written as

([ 95 * 0.15 ] + [ 92 * 0.60 ] + [ 96 * 0.25 ]) / ( 0.15 + 0.60 + 0.25 ) = 93.45 %

Or in general form, where A, B, C are category grades, and W is weight

[ A * W1 ] + [ B * W2 ] + [ C * W3 ] + ... + [ X * Wn ]

Remember, the formula for grade calculation is sum of the grades per category divided by the total weight.

([ A * W1 ] + [ B * W2 ] + [ C * W3 ] + … + [ X * Wn ]) / (W1 + W2 + W3 + ... + Wn) = G

So if everything is graded, the grade is divided by 1, and so that step is unnecessary. If, however, everything is not graded, remember that you divide by the sum of the weights that actually have grades in their category.

So let’s say that in Professor L’s class, we had not taken the final yet. I would calculate the grade as follows

([ 95 * 0.15 ] + [ 92 * 0.60 ]) / (0.75) = 92.6 % Overall Grade

I hoped this helped a little bit. I would like to make this into a series where I can explain grade prediction and different functions of grade calculation so let me know if this was helpful.
